BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Civitan International, a global service organization serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), will join research center scientists and leadership at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) to announce Civitan International’s $1.25M pledge over the next five years. The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 30th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the CIRC located at 1719 6th Avenue S., Birmingham, Ala.

“We are beyond excited to make this announcement with fellow Civitans, researchers and other leaders present to continue our organization’s commitment to the ground-breaking research happening on UAB’s campus,” Mark Eisinger, executive vice president of Civitan International said.

Attendees will hear from Mark Eisinger, executive vice president of Civitan International, about why Civitan has made this pledge, and remarks from Craig Powell, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Civitan International Research Center, about the impact this pledge will make on their research efforts. UAB’s Heersink School of Medicine Dean Anupam Agarwal, M.D., will also be in attendance and offer remarks about Civitan’s pledge. Civitan International members will have the option to join via Zoom.

Civitan International, founded in Birmingham, Ala., is comprised of service clubs across the globe who all fundraise for the research center through events such as Walk & Roll for Research, the Breakthru Golf Benefit and the Junior Civitan youth leadership conference, All In Summit.

“It is powerful to realize Civitans globally find it important to support the work being done at the CIRC here in Birmingham and continue to fundraise to support the studies of our scientists who are focused on research related to intellectual and developmental disabilities,” Dr. Craig Powell, director of the Civitan International Research Center said.

The CIRC was established in 1989 on the campus of UAB with the support of Civitan International and the organization has since donated over $21M to support the center, with a majority of these funds being generated by volunteers. This pledge is the organization’s newest financial commitment to the research center.

The CIRC has grown to over 100 faculty members. Additionally, CIRC faculty have received numerous national and international awards recognizing excellence in research and training.
