JUNIOR CIVITANS PREPARE FOR THEIR VIRTUAL CONVENTION

Each summer, Junior Civitan International hosts their International Convention, and all members are invited to join the fun! From electing next year’s international leaders and honing leadership skills to specific officer training and making memories with friends, this is the ultimate Junior Civitan experience. This event will be held via zoom, so be sure to share the word with your Juniors and encourage them to sign up!

Special Guest Speaker Spotlight: CIRC Scientist, Dr. Rajesh K. Kana
We are thrilled to announce that this year’s attendees will hear from Dr. Rajesh K. Kana, a world-renowned leader in neuroscience. Dr. Kana is the Associate Dean for Graduate and Continuing Education and a Professor of Psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

With over 120 publications and a background that includes a Fulbright Fellowship at UCLA and training at Carnegie Mellon, Dr. Kana is at the forefront of autism research. Using advanced brain imaging like MRI, he works to understand the functional organization of the brain in neurodevelopmental disorders. He is also the author of the 2022 book, The Neuroscience of Autism.

Be sure to share this information with your Juniors! This is a unique opportunity to learn from a top-tier scientist about a cause central to the Civitan mission.

The convention is only for Juniors, so be sure to spread the word and have them head over to www.juniorcivitan.org/convention to learn more and register!

SHROPSHIRE WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Junior Civitan is more than just a service organization; it is a training ground for the leaders of tomorrow. We are incredibly proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Shropshire Scholarships, awarded to a select group of students who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and a lifelong commitment to “Service Above Self.”

The Shropshire Scholarship is a testament to the hard work these students have put into their communities and their academics. We are honored to play a small part in their journey as they head off to college and continue to make an impact. Please join us in celebrating these 14 remarkable scholars which include Antonio Millian, Caleb Wilbanks, Cindy Islas Figueroa, Dharani Thangasamy, Diyora Rasulova, Dylan Betancur, Gianna Talarico, Gracelyn Lowe, Hayden Johnson, Kacie Byrd, Sara Kylee Colburn, Sarah Prete, Tabetha Ward, and Wyenzdea Gutierrez.

YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE – ELECTIONS AND BYLAW AMENDMENTS

Every member (from a club in good standing) has the right to vote at the Civitan International Convention! Voting delegates are no longer limited by club size; if you register to attend in-person or virtual by July 19th, you can vote for the President-Elect, your Regional Directors, and important bylaw amendments. This is your chance to exercise your right to vote and help shape our organization’s leadership.

There are two amendments to be considered in Louisville, including a change to our senior staff title. Currently, only Civitan uses the title “Executive Vice President,” while most nonprofits use “Executive Director” or “CEO.” In November, the Board unanimously approved replacing the EVP title with Executive Director to better align with common nonprofit standards. The second amendment involves the separation of duties for the corporation’s Treasurer. Currently, the EVP also acts as the Secretary and Treasurer; however, the Board proposes appointing a qualified volunteer from our membership—such as an accountant or banker—to serve as Treasurer instead. This provides a valuable “third party” set of eyes to oversee our finances and audit processes.

Official language and full details for both amendments will be presented in the May Magazine. In the meantime, be sure to register for the convention by the July deadline so you are qualified to cast your vote. Your voice is essential to the ratification of these changes for our organization!
