ABOUT CIVITAN

Our vision is to be a global community where people of all abilities and talents make the world a better place.
Civitan Changes Lives
Civitan is the only service organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and through the Civitan International Research Center, we are helping find cures and develop treatments for autism, Rett syndrome, Down syndrome and many more brain-related disorders.
Civitans are Champions of Service
Civitan offers people of all ages the opportunity to selflessly serve their communities and make the world a better place. Whether building wheelchair ramps, developing inclusive playgrounds or fundraising for the Civitan International Research Center, we are a hands-on organization ready to roll up our sleeves to positively impact individuals in our communities.
Civitan Spans The Globe
Since the beginning, Civitans have united under a universal mission rooted in service. Spanning more than 20 nations in North America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Islands, Civitan is truly a global organization dedicated to serving others.
SPOTLIGHTS
Civitan is making a difference in our local community through service projects. We meet monthly and have a variety of options for members to choose from that are making a difference in the lives of those around us.
Supporting Those with Disabilities
Triangle Luncheon Civitan (TLC) club members actively support those with developmental and other disabilities. We provide pizza for local Special Olympians participating in tournaments and host two Spring Dances that include crafts, bingo, group photos and a pizza lunch. We also throw parties for ladies at a group home and serve snacks during concerts for the special needs community.
Fulfilling Community Needs
We support our community with hands-on projects as well as monetarily. Each year, we present scholarships to two deserving college-bound high school graduates. Our hands-on projects include collecting items for the Durham VA Hospital outreach program, providing snacks to the Ronald McDonald House of Durham and filling Christmas stockings for children at the Boys and Girls Homes of NC.
Working Together
TLC members build camaraderie while raising funds through working Duke men’s football and basketball game concessions, holding Quarter Auctions and selling RADA cutlery (see Resources). Monies earned are donated to non-profits such as the Civitan International Research Center, Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House, Boys and Girls Homes of NC, the Durham County Community Living Program and Durham Urban Ministries.
Enjoying Engaging Meetings
Club members enjoy luncheon meetings twice monthly. Highlights include informative speakers from the community and from Civitan leadership. A.J. Reynolds, past Chaplain of our district, is pictured above. He recently spoke at our Clergy Appreciation Luncheon. Holiday activities and an annual club picnic provide additional opportunities for fellowship. Discovery meetings are held periodically to welcome new members.

In May, we hosted over 700 Durham athletes, their teachers and coaches at a Spring Dance providing pizza, crafts, bingo and group photos. We also host parties for ladies at a group home and serve snacks during concerts for the special needs community.

Our hands-on projects include collecting food for the Durham VA Hospital Food Pantry, providing items from the Ronald McDonald House wish lists and filling Christmas stockings for children at the Boys and Girls Homes.
