During Civitan’s May club meeting, past Civitan Club President Randy Camden presented the winner of the FCIDD (Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) scholarship award to Jadyn Clark from Liberty High School, Bedford, VA. The FCIDD is a highly regarded public charity organization supporting thousands of individuals and families who have intellectual & developmental disabilities.

SML Civitan Club members pitched a tent and participated in Harmony Day Support’s car show as a supporting vendor. The event was held in Lynchburg, VA. Harmony Day Support is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide individual encouragement & support for adolescents and adults with various levels of developmental disabilities and to bring harmony and balance to their daily lives. Teena Anderson, Community Relations Director for Harmony Day Support did a fantastic job organizing and managing the event.

SML Civitan members recently presented a grant for $26,000 to Healing Strides from The Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (FCIDD). The FCIDD is a public charity organization supporting thousands of individuals and their families who are afflicted with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Healing Strides of VA is a non-profit organization founded in 1991. Their mission is to promote wellness for people with personal challenges who can benefit from equine assisted activities and therapies in a safe and supportive environment.

Randy Camden, former club President telling the remarkable true story, at our January meeting, about four chaplains during WWII who saved the lives of hundreds of soldiers while the ship they were on was attacked. The story goes that four chaplains distributed life preservers and assisted others to abandon ship, giving up their own life preservers and then coming together in prayer as the ship disappeared beneath the surface. Clergy appreciation week is Feb. 3-10, 2024.

We are proud to support the Civitan International Research Center (CIRC), an interdisciplinary center focusing on the development of the mind-brain through service, education and research. The CIRC was established in 1989 on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with the support of Civitan International.

The Smith Mountain Lake Club seeks to help fill the needs of our community. We are a selfless group with dedicated hearts who enjoy service and fellowship with one another.
