ABOUT CIVITAN

Our vision is to be a global community where people of all abilities and talents make the world a better place.
Civitan Changes Lives
Civitan is the only service organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and through the Civitan International Research Center, we are helping find cures and develop treatments for autism, Rett syndrome, Down syndrome and many more brain-related disorders.
Civitans are Champions of Service
Civitan offers people of all ages the opportunity to selflessly serve their communities and make the world a better place. Whether building wheelchair ramps, developing inclusive playgrounds or fundraising for the Civitan International Research Center, we are a hands-on organization ready to roll up our sleeves to positively impact individuals in our communities.
Civitan Spans The Globe
Since the beginning, Civitans have united under a universal mission rooted in service. Spanning more than 20 nations in North America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Islands, Civitan is truly a global organization dedicated to serving others.
SPOTLIGHTS
Civitan is making a difference in our local community through service projects. We meet monthly and have a variety of options for members to choose from that are making a difference in the lives of those around us.
A Recent Club Meeting
Our club meets monthly via zoom to consider business items and to learn about and connect with organizations in our community.
An ArtStream Performance
Our club sponsored a grant through the Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities for ArtStream, an inclusive theatre company in the District, Maryland and Virginia area. The grant supported the organization’s technology upgrades as well as expanding and upgrading its costume shop to support 4 cabaret companies and 6 theatre troupes.
Next Chapter Bookclub
Our club supports a Next Chapter book club in Montgomery County as a service project. This is an inclusive book club whose members meet weekly to read together. The club has met for over 10 years and read a wide variety of books – from biographies, plays, poems, young adult novels, current adult fiction and more.
Urban Thrift Truck and GSSC members
Urban Thrift is a retail store run by The Arc Montgomery County to provide employment opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to raise money for the organization. The Greater Silver Spring Civitan Club helped secure a grant for Urban Thrift to bring its equipment up to current day retail standards.
