DESCRIPTION:Vladimir Parpura\, MD\, PhD\, MAE\, holds both a medical degree\, awarded from the University of Zagreb in Croatia in 1989\, and a doctorate\, received in Neuroscience and Zoology from Iowa State University in 1993. He is presently a tenured Professor in the Department of Neurobiology\, University of Alabama at Birmingham\, U.S.A. Parpura is President (2017-2019 term) of American Society for Neurochemistry. He has been elected to the Council of International Society for Neurochemistry (2019-2023 term).  He received 2017-2018 McNulty Civitan Scientist Award given by the Civitan International Research Center and the Chesapeake District of Civitan International. \n

DESCRIPTION:Mak Nong is originally from Long Beach\, California. He grew up playing adaptive sports\, eventually taking his skills across the country where he played Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball at the University of Illinois. Nong graduated in 2016 with a degree in Recreation\, Sports\, & Tourism. After college\, Nong moved to France where he played professional wheelchair basketball and won a championship in the IWBF European League. Since returning to the US\, Nong has become a member of the United States National Amputee Soccer team and has been working as an Adaptive Recreation Specialist for the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association in New Lenox\, Illinois. \nJoin Mak as he teaches simple exercises anyone can practice from the comfort of their homes. You might not have even stopped to think about it if you’re homeschooling\, still working on the front lines\, or enacting the Civitan spirit and serving those in need. For Part 1 of our series on Health & Wellness we’re proud to introduce Dr. Merida Grant\, presenting “Mentally Managing the New Normal”. Dr. Grant will help us identify signs of stress and depression due to current circumstances\, and the impact it has on our overall health and wellbeing. Dr. Grant is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the UAB School of Medicine\, with degrees from Temple University and Duke University and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at Pittsburgh. Her research specializes in depression and mood disorders. She is also an Associate Professor in the Behavioral Neurobiology Division of the Psychiatry Department at UAB\, as well as the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the General Clinical Research Center. \nThis meeting will begin at Noon CST.
