Who Are Civitans: Civitans are everyday citizens, just like you and me, who come together in communities throughout the world to make life better for their neighbors. Family, friends, neighbors and co-workers meet at local Civitan clubs to socialize, learn and serve in their communities. Starting with just a single club and a vision for helping others, Civitan has grown to over 40,000 members in 24 countries including youth and college programs. At an international level, Civitan is devoted to improving the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. This focus began in the 1950’s when Civitan funded some of the first special education training for school-teachers. That commitment continues today through local and international efforts such as summer camps, vocational programs, Special Olympic Games and cutting-edge research into autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy at the Civitan International Research Center. This state of the art center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham brings together top scientific minds and the latest technology to create innovative therapies and treatments for people with developmental disabilities. Despite the size and reach of Civitans, each local club identifies their own projects that best meet the needs of the community in which they are located. The Richmond Civitan Club is always looking for projects, people and groups that need assistance. Some of our projects include:
The Richmond Civitan Club was chartered on February 17, 2006 meaning we are in our infancy, yet we have a great group of members eager to serve the area! We always welcome new members or those interested in investigating our Club; the public is invited to attend our meetings. |
